Visiting Passyunk Avenue this holiday season? Look up at the windows and meet some of our favorite South Philly neighbors! It's the new holiday tradition at the corner of E. Passyunk and Tasker.

  • It started as a fun way to let the neighbors know we were waving at them from the windows. It morphed into a neighborhood party, and then into an annual tradition. This is our first holiday window display in 2013.

  • Every November, we pray that the leaves drop quickly so the photos will be visible. The sign on the front door identifies everyone in the windows. The lighted white sign in the bottom right window proclaims, "Welcome to the New/Old Neighborhood".

  • And, yes, we're finally visible from our kitchen windows, at least during the holidays. That's neighbors Jim and Fernando on the floor below, both holding Barney.

  • When new-kid Kate locked herself out of the house without a coat, Henry (left) and Steven (center) of 1540 Hardware handed her $20 and a pair of reading glasses, and sent her to Black & Brew ’til Dave could rescue her. My heroes! That’s Frank, a longtime East Passyunk neighbor, at right.

  • Julia Zagar has owned South Street’s fun and fabulous Eye’s Gallery since 1968. When we decided to move to Philadelphia, she and her husband Isaiah loaded us into a car and said, “You’ve got to see South Philadelphia!”

  • The creator of Philadelphia’s (truly) Magic Gardens at 1020 South Street, Isaiah Zagar’s sparkling found-object/mosaic murals now appear on over 100 walls around the city. Isaiah taught Kate to mosaic in 1997, and she and Dave created a two-story mosaic on their former Asbury Park gallery.

  • That’s Kathie, our across-the-street neighbor and one of the first people we met, smiling from the third floor. Below her is Heather of J Squared Salon, Kate’s not-so-secret source for the best haircuts and purple/magenta highlights ever.

  • Louise (top left) is a longtime East Passyunk resident and the owner of Family Daycare. And, yes, that’s Officer John – a South Philadelphia institution since 1990 – without his familiar segway. Below them are...

  • New to our 2015 windows are Vicki (left) and Fran. Fran (holding Lucia), owned Frankie’s on the Avenue, the go-to women’s clothing shop from 1989 to 2014. Vicki is the fabulous and (until now) secret yarn-bomber of E. Passyunk. Kate caught her early one morning and finally convinced her to pose.

  • An example of Vicki’s colorful yarn-bombing on the corner by our house. That’s Victor and Bella in the background.

  • Also new to our 2015 holiday windows is Susan, a lifelong resident and all-around good egg. Among her many volunteer activities, she is a Penna. Horticultural Society “Tree Tender” who keeps an eye on our neighborhood trees – including the one that’s trying to block her third-floor photo.

  • Rick (left) and Tom (center), the personable owners of Metro Mens Clothing, Dave’s favorite stop for much-admired holiday party shirts. At right, that’s Anthony of Urban Jungle, the always helpful purveyor of giant planters that let us pretend we have a yard.

  • We hope you'll visit our holiday windows if you're dining or playing near South Philly's Singing Fountain (E. Passyunk and Tasker) between Thanksgiving and Jan. 31. Happy holidays from all of us!
